The Dundee Saturday Morning Amateur Football League is a league for adult men. They affiliated to the SAFA in season 2009-2010 after existing for 17 years as a friendly league. Games are played at usually Riverside Park, Drumgeith or the University Grounds in Dundee.
The early years of the league’s formation are sketchy though an initial loose collection of teams started out in the early 1990’s playing at Riverside in Dundee. Founding members of the league that still play are Cowboys (changed name to Clarks FC), Ferry Mechanics, Wellbeat (Changed name to The Beat) with a number of teams having joined in the past 10 years.
Over the years, the league built up a reputation for good clean football, played in a competitive manner and with a minimum of bureaucracy. In recent years the league has been the fastest growing in Scottish Amateur Football expanding from the original 14 clubs who affiliated to the SAFA, to 2013-14 with 35 clubs.
This expanded league now is split into three divisions, with the Premier League consisting of 12 teams, the 1st Division of 12 and 12 in the 2nd Division.
As well as now entering teams into the Evening Telegraph North of Tay and Fosters Scottish Amateur Cup, a pre season cup competition is played in memory of Brian Adamson, currently held by Hilltown Hotspurs, and there are five other Cup competitions. The Referees Cup final has now been renamed the Shaun Kelly Cup Final in memory of a player who died on the pitch in March 2012 whilst enjoying his football match and is the finale to the season at which the fine money collected over the season and other funds raised for charity are donated to the representatives of the respective causes.
2017-18 donation of £500 to Togs, a local charity and £1500 to the Tracy Burke fundraising efforts, another local cause here in Dundee. This years donations bring total donations in the last 10 years around £20k.
In addition the consolation Cup donated by the family of George McArthur, and named the George McArthur Memorial Cup is contested at the end of the season by the teams knocked out in the first rounds of the Referees Cup. It is normally played on the Friday evening before the Shaun Kelly Cup Final.
There are also three Divisional Cups played in early Spring, the Premier Cup, now renamed the Ross Kirk Memorial Cup, Balgay Bar 1st Division Cup and the Trident trophy 2nd Division Cup.
The league format is that all teams play each other twice with three teams to be relegated from the Premier and three to come up from the 1st Division and 2nd Division. This generally makes for an exciting finale to the league campaign.
Current Premier League champions are Hilltown Hotspurs, the Premier Division Cup going to Park Tool. FC Kettledrum won the Shaun Kelly Cup. St James ath won the 1st Division league and DC Athletic up the Consolation Cup, (the George McArthur Memorial Cup) and Ferry Mechanic the Balgay Bar 1st Division league Cup. 2nd Division league winners were FC Boukir also winning the 2nd Division league Cup.
The League is awaiting confirmation of a sponsor for 2018-19 with The Premier League sponsored by Doc Ferrys, the 2nd Division by Trident Trophies.
Following on from the tragic death of Shaun Kelly the league organised for 100 guys to receive training on HeartStart and have purchased automatic defibrillators to have at all their matches from season 2012-13 onwards - a unique initiative which encourages players to learn up vital lifesaving skills.
